Event Summary:
On June 24, 2024, Sabarmati University, Ahmedabad, organized a one-day seminar on Criminal Law, focusing on the recently enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) 2023. These new laws significantly overhaul India’s criminal justice system, replacing the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973, and Indian Evidence Act (IEA) 1872.
The seminar aimed to equip Gujarat Police officials with a comprehensive understanding of these new legal frameworks. Dr. Sunita Chauhan and Ms. Laxmi Tiwari, from Sabarmati University’s School of Law, led the sessions under the guidance of Mr. Sunny Patel, President of the University, and Dr. Vivek Sidhu, Director of the School of Law.
The seminar attracted over 200 police personnel, including senior officers like ACP J.S. Gedam and police inspectors J.H. Chaudhri, P.V. Patel, and Jignesh Kandorya. Police Sub-Inspectors, senior constables, and junior constables also participated, showcasing the widespread interest in familiarizing themselves with the new laws.
The seminar likely covered key aspects of the BNS, BNSS, and BSA, including:
- Substantive Offenses: The BNS likely outlines the revised classifications and definitions of criminal offenses.
- Criminal Procedure: The BNSS may have addressed changes in investigation procedures, arrest, detention, bail, trial processes, and sentencing.
- Evidence Admissibility: The BSA may have covered the revised rules for presenting evidence in court, including the role of digital forensics.
By attending this seminar, Gujarat Police officials gained valuable insights into the new criminal law framework, empowering them to effectively handle criminal cases under the BNS, BNSS, and BSA. This knowledge will be crucial in upholding the law and ensuring a smooth transition from the previous legal system.
